Google Play Store expected to sell audiobooks

It seems Google is planning to sell audiobooks on its Play Store.

When a tech blog spotted a banner ad for audiobooks directly through Google's online store, Google Play, everyone jumped on their seemingly imminent arrival. Audiobooks on the Google Play Store have been hinted in the past as well. The report also says that the banner posted by Google also indicated a 50 percent discount off the first audiobook purchase. There is no news yet as to when the new hub will be added to the Google Play Store as the banner gave little to no indication of what fans can expect. An update for Play Books app specifically mentions "audiobooks", as well as audio playback controls like play and pause. For the unintended, audiobooks are an exact word-for-word version of books, which allows users to listen to them on a music player, smartphone etc. Further reports also indicate that the move is expected to rival Amazon and its long list of retailers in the audiobook market.

Then again, things will get a bit more cluttered with the addition of an audiobooks section. The banner to the category does not appear to be working at the time of publishing this article.

Some of the Play Store users on the Website and on the mobile applications have found a banner ad regarding the Play Store Audiobooks. It might also mean that not all countries would have access to the new segment from the start.

Thanks to some digging by the folks over at Android Police, we also know that the Google Play Books app is about to be upgraded with audiobook support. It said that audiobooks and ebooks will be divided into separate tabs.

Currently, the Google Play Store houses a few audiobooks but it is unfortunately not as extensive as the library of Amazon.

Google audiobooks will take on Amazon, which recently introduced support for audiobooks on its Kindle devices.
