That means USA customers will now be forking out a hefty $156 per year, which is far more than the $132 they were previously paying. The Amazon monthly Prime program for students is also increasing by 18 percent - going from $5.49 a month to $6.49 a month.

While Amazon hasn't confirmed exactly how many Prime customers it has, its estimated somewhere between 65 million and 80 million globally.

"Once on the annual plan, customers rarely churn".

It has not been stated whether prices in other territories will go up, or how much they would go up by.

"Consumers will never want to see price rises, but the simple fact of the matter is that price rises are inevitable at some stage". Inc. said existing monthly members will start paying the higher fees next month.

Amazon announced Friday that it will increase the price for Prime memberships in the USA by 18%, as the company eyes programming with wider reach and an increase in content spend. "The number of times eligible for unlimited Free Two-Day Shipping increased in recent years from 20 million to more than 100 million items".

"We also continue to introduce new, popular and award-winning Prime Originals".

Amazon Prime provides users with a suite of added benefits, including fast shipping and access to its video-streaming library. I loved it when I had it for the free one-year student trial, but having to pay an additional $12.99 a month doesn't sound like a deal worth pursuing for me personally. Existing Prime and Prime Student members will pay the new price for renewals happening after February 18.

Amazon hasn't confirmed a United Kingdom price rise however, so don't panic just yet.
