The hunt is on for meteorites in MI

The meteor was seen from Gaylord, down to Detroit and even spotted in OH on January 16.

Ward said he utilized seismic information, Doppler radar and witness data to limit where to look. They looked in fields and other areas before heading out on a frozen lake. For instance, the enormous fireball that injured 1,600 people in and around Chelyabinsk, Russia in 2013 was 60 feet wide, and produced 4,700 times the energy of this MI rock, according to the scientists speaking to the AP. "I'm not going to reveal the exact location because we have a team out there looking for more".

Slisher and his colleagues were careful to take photographs of each meteorite, as it was found in the snow. "These are not easy to find".

He was right. He found another one shortly before 1 p.m. and another while he was on the phone with a Free Press reporter at about 1:39 p.m.

Licata says there are probably meteorites in nearby woods, but those rocks will be harder to find.

One of the pieces is being kept on ice and will be sent to NASA for evaluation. Astronomers from Flint's Longway Planetarium have actually found fragments meteorites from this bright bolide explosion! Note the far right meteorite, which has a small area showing the texture of the rock, and revealing the characteristic fusion crust that almost all meteorites have.

The stony meteor, Slisher said, does not have much iron content and didn't pick up on their metal detector.

"We don't want a whole bunch of people rushing in and ruining their day after they've been nice enough to help us", Ward said.

The American Meteor Society has so far received more than 355 fireball sightings from six US states and Ontario, Canada. "And every meteorite that's found here, every single one, it's gonna sell for at least its weight in gold".

He said NASA estimates the original meteor that came down was about six feet across.

Ward said he goes on a hunt about three times a year, usually outside the U.S.
