Toyota has unveiled the all-new 2019 Toyota Avalon, which gets an extra dose of style this time around. Not in Japan, but in China, where it will also be built and sold, because they still like sedans there.

The 2018 Avalon is based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform. The rear cabin has been pushed back and the rear quarter windows made longer, making for a faster C-pillar rake and a more coupé-like profile. The new sedan sports updated design and new premium features. Not that it's a bad thing - it's low, wide and purposeful, and boasts an aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.27 Cd. The XSE and Touring can be had in either gray or black Perforated Ultrasuede and the XLE receives a trio of color offerings with gray, beige, or black Softex. Optional LED head- and tail lights are offered, with twin projectors, sequential indicators and laser-etched lenses for the daytime running lights and tail lights. Toyota claims class-leading head-, leg- and shoulder room for rear passengers.

Toyota announced that vehicle models with Entune 3.0 and Enform 2.0 entertainment platforms will fully support Apple CarPlay use in the United States. The latter is integrated with smartwatches and Amazon's Alexa personal assistant. CarPlay will be standard across the Avalon lineup, and we think it's safe to say you can count on it flowing into other Toyotas down the line.

The engine features Atkinson combustion cycle and Toyota's D-4S direct and port injection system, and is mated to an 8-speed automatic vs. a 6-speed auto in the outgoing fourth-gen Avalon.

Meanwhile, sales of Mr Kipling cakes were also lower in the quarter, again following a move to more optimal promotional activity. In the 13 weeks to 30 December 2017, the company turned over £261.4m, a 4 per cent increase for the same period in 2016.

If fuel economy takes a higher priority, the 2019 Avalon Hybrid has a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a battery-electric propulsion system. Lastly, there's no mention of the carmaker support Android Auto, either now or in the future.

When the 2019 Toyota Avalon rolls out next year, the Apple CarPlay will be part of the package. In addition to the standard three modes of Eco, Normal and Sport, the Avalon Touring will have a Sport+ mode, as well as a driver-adjustable Custom setting.

A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) sends power to the front wheels. Changes in solenoid force happen in just 20 milliseconds. Toyota has also realized that people love to bring their technology along for the ride, and have given the Avalon slide-open eBin containing a 12-volt plug and a standard wireless Qi mobile device charger.
