Maharashtra: 5 wrestlers killed in a major road accident in Sangli district

Of Six, police identified five deceased wrestlers as Shubham Ankush Ghadge (23), Saholi, Kadegaon tehsil; Saurabh Anil Mane (20) Malkhe in Karad tehsil; Avinash Sarjerao Gaikwad (21), Khupire, Shirala tehsil of this district; Akash Dadaso Desai (23) Kale in Karad tehsil; and Vijay Patil (23). They were returning from Satara after attending a wrestling contest. All the deceased wrestlers belonged to Kranti Kushti Sankul institution, which has been dominating the state-level tournaments in recent years, and were expected to make the grade for the national championships soon.

Five others, including wrestlers, were injured in the accident and they were admitted to hospitals.

The accident occurred at around 1 am when the wrestlers were returning after participating in a competition in Satara. "They were heading to Kundal in Sangli", a senior police official told PTI. The tractor was coming from the opposite direction. The police have formed teams to nab the driver.

The mishap was so bad that the entire MUV damaged in the mishap and the wrestlers were trapped inside the vehicle. According to police, five of the six persons died on the spot while one person died while he was undergoing treatment at an hospital in Miraj. The other injured wrestlers have also sustained serious injuries where some of them have received fracture to their legs and they are undergoing treatment. A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Moto Vehicles Act has been registered at the Chinchni-Vangi police station. The driver of the accident fled the spot after the accident.
