The 71st Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to open on May 8 and close on 19. Though it often features movies that go on to relative arthouse obscurity, in recent years the festival has unveiled many top prestige titles.

Blanchett, 48, received global acclaim for her role as Elizabeth I of England in Shekhar Kapur's 1998 film "Elizabeth" and has won three Golden Globe awards.

A two-time Academy award victor, Blanchett follows Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, who headed the 70th edition of the festival previous year.

Cannes president Pierre Lescure and delegate general Thierry Fremaux have praised Cate while throwing their support behind her ahead of her exciting role.

As jury president, her job will be to watch all 20 films in the main competition and guide other members of the judging panel to a consensus on the much sought after Palme d'Or for best picture and other categories. Blanchett, 48, is looking forward to attend the festival exclusively to watch films.

Earlier his week she joined 300 other influential Hollywood women to launch the Time's Up initiative, higlighting the abuse of women in the film industry. "Our conversations from this autumn tell us she will be a committed President, a passionate woman and a big-hearted spectator".
