Liverpool Mayor calls for speedy insurer action following vehicle park fire

The fire next to Liverpool's Echo Arena threatened horses that were stabled in the garage for performances at the Liverpool International Horse Show.

Thick black smoke still billowng out of #EchoArena vehicle park and it's 3 in the morning, 10 hours after it started, still hearing loud explosions every few minutes from the auto park which is just a few hundred metres away behind my apartment!

The fire was accidental but questions have been raised over whether a sprinkler system would have extinguished, or at least slowed-down the impact of the fire.

MERSEYSIDE FIRE AND Rescue Service has released photos of the aftermath of a huge fire which gutted a vehicle park in King's Dock at the weekend.

Calling 101 or 999 with vehicle-related queries will be referred to the owner's insurance company and will not be dealt with by Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service and Merseyside Police.

Former Liverpool and England worldwide footballer Mark Wright and his wife Sue, who were visiting the horse show, were forced to abandon their vehicle and fled along with six children who were with them as they dialled 999 for help.

"We believe that all vehicles parked in the auto park have been destroyed and advise owners to contact their insurance companies", Merseyside police said in a statement to the media. Despite the damage, an arena spokesperson confirmed all people and horses are safe and that "there were no injuries during this awful incident". However, the ABI said it was highly unusual to have so many vehicles destroyed at the same time at a single location.

Witness Sue Wright, who helped move some of the horses, said flames were shooting out of the Land Rover engine.

"If you see smoke from the Liverpool Echo Arena auto park fire then stay indoors, close all your windows and doors and if you have difficulty breathing seek medical assistance".

The fire reached temperatures of 1000 degrees C, and required 12 fire engines from neighbouring departments to bring it under control.

Nearby apartments were evacuated because of the heavy smoke.

She said the fire was "ferocious and spreading".
