The same, however, can not be said for Jack Sock.

Haase won his quarter-final 6-4, 6-4 against Germany's Peter Gojowczyk who had beaten the top-seed and reigning champion Jack Sock the previous day.

The oft-injured world No.12 will go on to face Bautista Agut, who did it the hard way against semi-final foe Robin Haase by winning 6-7 (7-9) 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-5).

Third seed Sam Querrey and fourth seed John Isner were also eliminated at the first hurdle, losing to Jiri Vesely and Hyeon Chung respectively.

"Today was a very tough match, I don't know how my body will be tomorrow, but now I want to enjoy the win and we'll see", Bautista Agut said.

In preparation for the Australian Open, starting January 15, Del Potro proved just too strong for the Canadian and won 6-2, 6-4.

"I'm very focused to reach the final here".
