De Minaur takes on 28-year-old Frenchman Benoit Paire for the right to take on Russia's Daniil Medvedev in the men's decider tomorrow night.

Down 5-3 with Medvedev sitting on a championship point, the Australian clawed his way back on serve before breaking to even the scores at 5-5 on the back of some superb defence.

"I said to myself, "just keep digging, leave it all out there, find a way to just make it competitive", a gracious de Minaur said.

Next to nothing has stopped de Minaur this year.

Another in Sydney would have been a momentous occasion to savour, a first piece of silverware to reward the 18-year-old's breakout fortnight.

"After the match, I didn't fall down or anything, but I'm really happy".

But Medvedev turned on the class and won the last two games for a memorable title victory.

He will now face world no.20 Tomas Berdych in the first round.

De Minaur, the home crowd favourite, was off to a bright start as he needed just 30 minutes to break Medvedev three times on his way to taking the set.

Down 5-3, de Minaur saved a set point and held serve but his opponent held his nerve to level the ledger.

The 84th-ranked Medvedev also came back from a set down to upset Italian fourth seed Fabio Fognini 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the semi-finals of the tournament.

The momentum was firmly with Medvedev, who charged into a 4-0 lead as De Minaur tightened up, but the teenager was not finished yet, saving a match point prior to getting back on serve at 5-5, as the pair continued to trade punches.
