"As the world's first consumer modular MicroLED television, "The Wall" represents another breakthrough".

However this isn't the real point of Samsung's big new HDR 4K TV and its 146 inch screen, No, what Samsung really wants from such a massive piece of home entertainment technology lots of attention to its size during a major consumer electronics event (VES 2018), so that the company can then showcase all the cool new display technologies that "The Wall" comes with and let buyers judge for themselves if they'd be willing to pay premium prices for the same things in the more ordinary-sized 4K HDR TVs that emerge in 2018 and maybe 2019.

Samsung Electronics launched "The Frame" lineup previous year. Samsung has shown its LED technology before, and it has been available in signage applications, typically for very large displays in outdoor places such as stadiums.

It is a self-emitting TV with micrometer scale LEDs - which are much smaller than current LEDs, and serve as their own source of light. "We're excited about this next step along our roadmap to the future of screen technology, and the remarkable viewing experience it offers to consumers", said Jonghee Han, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics.

Perhaps the only real competitor when it comes to size are projection TVs. The Wall is the house-size version, a mere 146 inches diagonal. They also bring active HDR that improves the image quality of HDR10 and Hybrid Log Gamma content by analyzing individual images. Other vendors touting 4K projectors included Sony, LG, and Chinese vendor Changhong.

Almost all of the big vendors have moved away from 3D TVs, as the technology just didn't gain market acceptance.

However, don't expect to see this TV in retail stores anytime soon. It looks like a 65-inch TV, but it's really a 65-inch gaming monitor with G-Sync.

The technology underlying The Wall is quite interesting.

Of course, all of these technologies will be much more expensive than conventional sets, but they are important technologies, because they can often go where conventional TVs are a tough fit.

The CES 2018 has come to a grand close and there are so many products to look forward.
