Most of central and south Alabama will only get a cold rain.

Winter weather advisory in effect from 6 p.m. today through noon Thursday.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for areas in purple and a Winter Storm Warning for areas in magenta, until 10 p.m.

Addison, Caledonia, Essex and Washington counties are also under a winter storm warning from 9 p.m. Friday to 4 p.m. Saturday. Mixed precipitation, snow and blowing snow expected. Total wet snow accumulations of up to 1 inch are expected, with localized amounts up to 3 inches. No possible accumulation figures were given. And Topeka police were in walk-in phase reporting. The snow will bring cold air and strong winds!

The weather service urges caution while shoveling.

By 9-11 a.m., we could start to see the rain freeze once it reaches the ground (freezing rain), and towards the end of that timeframe, sleet is possible west of I-65. Winds could gust as high as 35 miles per hour.

Some sleet or snow will also be possible, although, no accumulations of sleet or snow are expected. However, overnight lows will still dip down below the freezing point, potentially resulting in rough conditions on the roads. North wind 10 to 15 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 20 miles per hour. Blustery, with a north wind around 22 miles per hour. Wind chill values between -5 and 5. The strongest winds will be found from west central to south central Minnesota where winds could gust to 40 miles per hour. Temperatures are expected to remain freezing until Sunday across the region.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 26.

Where the front has already passed, temperatures were well below zero across much of the northern Plains and upper Midwest Friday morning.

Following the icy conditions overnight, snow will move in. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent.

Wednesday's low in Madison was 30 at 3:09 a.m., 19 degrees above the normal low and 52 degrees above the record low of 22 below for January 10, set in 1979 and 1982. Cloudy, with a high near 19.

Tuesday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 6. Subzero temperatures are possible Wednesday morning.
