Chilly weekend ahead; rain and sleet possible early next week — FORECAST

Most of central and south Alabama will only get a cold rain.

Winter weather advisory in effect from 6 p.m. today through noon Thursday.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for areas in purple and a Winter Storm Warning for areas in magenta, until 10 p.m.

Addison, Caledonia, Essex and Washington counties are also under a winter storm warning from 9 p.m. Friday to 4 p.m. Saturday. Mixed precipitation, snow and blowing snow expected. Total wet snow accumulations of up to 1 inch are expected, with localized amounts up to 3 inches. No possible accumulation figures were given. And Topeka police were in walk-in phase reporting. The snow will bring cold air and strong winds!

The weather service urges caution while shoveling.

By 9-11 a.m., we could start to see the rain freeze once it reaches the ground (freezing rain), and towards the end of that timeframe, sleet is possible west of I-65. Winds could gust as high as 35 miles per hour.

Some sleet or snow will also be possible, although, no accumulations of sleet or snow are expected. Where the front has already passed, temperatures were well below zero across much of the northern Plains and upper Midwest Friday morning.

Following the icy conditions overnight, snow will move in. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent.

Tuesday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 6. Subzero temperatures are possible Wednesday morning.
