It is now a straight choice between Ireland's Martin O'Neill and Espanyol's to be the next manager, as the club held further discussions on Thursday.

"Espanyol manager Quique Sanchez Flores was 50/1 a few days ago for the vacant position at Stoke but now finds himself the 2/5 favourite after proving very popular with punters recently", said BetVictor's Head of ante post Football Michael Triffitt.

A move for Gary Rowett was abandoned when the 43-year-old signed a new contract with Derby County, but the Republic of Ireland's Martin O'Neill has held talks with Stoke and is also being seriously considered. I think, unless he's changed his mind in the last hour or two, that he is going to say he is leaving, he's going to Stoke. It's a five-year deal and there's a lot of money available.

Flores was asked about whether he had an offer to return to the Premier League after his Espanyol side reached the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey. "But today is a happy day".

"He left it at that and now I reckon he's got about 24 hours to answer the call from Stoke".

Stoke hoped to have Flores installed by Friday but he is now likely to be in the stands for Monday's clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford.
