Are you ready for Senator Joe Arpaio?

Arpaio was found past year guilty of criminal contempt of court for intentionally disobeying a federal judge's 2011 order to stop his traffic patrols that targeted immigrants.

The 85-year-old Arpaio could shake up the late August Republican primary in a critical open-seat race to replace retiring Sen.

Arpaio, who would be 86 by the time he is sworn into the Senate, is running for the seat formerly occupied by Jeff Flake, who announced in October that he will resign at the end of his term.

"And yeah, there is a lot of people that do not want me to go to Washington, including a few Republicans".

"His candidacy shows that conservatives in Arizona are fed up with the status quo and know that we need senators who support President Trump and the (president's) America First agenda", Rollins said. "I'm going to have to work hard; you don't take anything for granted".

Arpaio joins a crowded Republican field already vying for the seat, alongside establishment candidate U.S. Rep. Martha McSally and pro-Trump candidate Kelli Ward, a former Arizona state senator.

Arpaio flirted with running for governor five times while he was sheriff but ultimately decided against doing so each time. Previous year he was found guilty of criminal contempt after repeatedly ignoring a court order and faced up to six months in jail.

The Examiner noted Arpaio is "virtually guaranteed" to rev up a Republican base that pushed Flake into retirement because of his feud with the president.

Arpaio said he has not spoken with Trump about the Senate bid, and did not ask for the pardon. But some immigrants' rights advocates publicly opposed that strategy, noting that Arpaio once formed an "illegal immigration posse" to track down undocumented immigrant families. People may say I'm insane.
