According to the Red Cross, blood donations decline in the winter, in part because seasonal illnesses and inclement weather can result in canceled blood drives.

Eligible individuals are urged to schedule a blood or platelet donation today by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767).

But the Red Cross had already been struggling keeping those shelves stocked. However, Jay says the more critical need is for platelets, Type O negative, Type B negative and Type AB.

Severe weather forced the unexpected cancellation of blood collection events in the region and donors are desperately needed to help replenish blood supplies.

While serving local hospitals is the first priority, the Red Cross can move blood products to where they are needed most.
