Boy dies from flu as OH hospitals report increase in cases

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit said two dogs imported from South Korea in late December were showing signs of a respiratory disease when a veterinarian examined them.

A four-year-old boy from Montgomery County is Ohio's first pediatric flu death of the year, according to Dayton and Montgomery County Public Health.

Louisiana is seeing widespread and early flu activity, and local physicians like Dr. Jeffrey Combetta, medical director at Franklin Medical Center, say their patients are asking what can be done to avoid the illness.

ODH also is reporting 1,750 new confirmed flu-associated hospitalizations in OH during the first week of January, a significant increase over 925 reported during the last week of December.

Last flu season OH saw seven pediatric deaths.

It's relevant to note that these are just the reported numbers - they could be much higher, as not everyone seeks medical attention when they have the flu. A 70-year-old woman from Mentor died during the week of December 24-30, and a 92-year-old woman from North Royalton died in October, the board said.
