Unemployment rates in Alabama hit record lows

The Labor Department's report on state unemployment released Friday showed rates fell in 19 other states, a positive sign for US economic growth.

Nebraska's jobless rate improved in November compared with last year, ticking down to 2.7 percent from 3.3 percent a year ago.

In addition to Alabama, states with the lowest unemployment rates included California, Hawaii, Mississippi and Texas in November. The November 2016 rate: 2.9 percent.

Only Hawaii, at 2 percent, and North Dakota, at 2.6 percent, had lower unemployment rates than Nebraska last month, federal authorities said. November's rate represents 75,807 unemployed persons, also a new record low, compared to 77,231 in October and 136,135 in November 2016. The state Employment Development Department reported Friday that it is the lowest number in data dating back to the beginning of 1976. Job totals have essentially been unchanged in 23 other states. The state's leisure and hospitality industry saw the biggest gains between October and November. California was second with 288,300.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Alaska's unemployment rate is at its highest levels since May 2012, when it was also 7.2 percent.

Commission experts say the Texas economy in November added 54,500 seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs.
