The fires, which seem to stem from the extended spell of dry and windy weather in the coastal state, have since multiplied and continued to burn.

They show the already burnt areas and the areas still up in flames.

NASA released some new images Friday of what the fires look like from space while the ISS crew is in low Earth orbit.

Bresnik added: "Thank you to all the first responders, firefighters, and citizens willing to help fight these California wildfires". They show smoke billowing across the Pacific Ocean from multiple fires, the largest of which is the Thomas fire in Ventura County. Ten years ago, as fall fires raced across Southern California, a blaze in Fallbrook injured five people, destroyed 206 homes and burned 14 square miles (36 square kilometers).

On 6 December American astronaut Randy Bresnik said: "I was asked this evening if we can see the SoCal fires from space". That, plus the strong Santa Ana winds have combined to create ideal conditions for devastating wildfires. Active fires appear orange; the burn scar is brown.

Russian astronaut Sergey Nikolayevich Ryazansky also shared some images of the rising smoke plumes. The MSI makes observations in visible, shortwave infrared and near infrared light.
