Let's talk turkey: It'll cost less to gobble, gobble this Thanksgiving

The list took into account serving quantities for a family of 10 with "plenty of leftovers".

Overall turkey prices are down about $1.34 per pound in New York State, a 9% drop from 2016, the Farm Bureau reported. That averages out to about $1.40 per pound.

"When you adjust for inflation, it's cheaper than it was 30 years ago when we first started this survey", says John Newton of the American Farm Bureau Federation. "Even as America's family farmers and ranchers continue to face economic challenges, they remain committed to providing a safe, abundant and affordable food supply for consumers at Thanksgiving and throughout the year".

The biggest reason why costs are expected to be down is because turkey, milk, rolls, and sweet potato prices are down.

However, the survey noted that some items, such as whipped cream, bread stuffing, cranberries and veggie trays, did increase in price from 2016 to 2017.

The Farm Bureau's survey studied prices in various regions around the state for 12 Thanksgiving food items ranging from turkey and rolls to fresh carrots and pumpkin pie.

A half- pint of whipping cream will cost, on average, $2.08, about 4 percent higher than past year "due to increased consumer demand for full-fat dairy products", Newton said.

"The price of thanksgiving dinner this year at $49.12 is the lowest level that we've seen in five years". Farm Bureau volunteer shoppers are asked to look for the best possible prices, without taking advantage of special promotional coupons or purchase deals, such as spending $50 and receiving a free turkey.

This is all from the annual Farm Bureau survey of food prices.
