Calif. Shooter's Wife Found Dead, 'Concealed Under The Floorboards'

Four people have died and two children are among the wounded after a mass shooting in Northern California, police said.

According to KCRA in Sacramento, the first shots were fired around 8 a.m. PT at Rancho Tehama School on the outskirts of Corning, California.

Only an outside bathroom was open, but it was empty.

Authorities and witnesses said he appeared to pick targets randomly, driving around the community and shooting at people from his vehicle before landing at the Rancho Tehama Elementary School, which immediately began its lockdown procedures and prevented him from entering the building.

School officials locked the doors when they heard gunfire in the distance. He fired about 30 rounds in six minutes before he took off. Nine other people also were hurt.

Mr Tello said he also saw a a dead woman lying on a street about a quarter of a mile from Rancho Tehama School. He continued the rampage until police shot him about 45 minutes after it started, Johnston said. Police say the shooter did not have a license to carry a gun - yet he had three of them on him at the time of the shootings.

His motive remains unclear, but a dispute with a neighbor found dead Tuesday may have sparked the rampage, authorities said. The shooting soon turned random, according to officials. On Tuesday, officials said the incident could have been so much worse if it wasn't for the quick thinking of staff at the elementary school.

All students and staff were accounted for and counselors will be made available, the school district said.

Sara Gonzalez said she had dropped her daughter off at the school when the gunman attempted to shoot her when their vehicles passed. Four of the children were at the school during the incident, and suffered injuries "ranging from very minor to life threatening", Johnston said.

Orr said the family tried to help her brother and "would even call authorities, hoping they would intervene". She said she believed he was addicted to drugs. He got out, wearing a protective vest, and walked onto the school grounds carrying a semi-automatic rifle.

He said the 45-minute rampage ended when a patrol auto rammed the stolen vehicle the shooter was driving and killed him in a shootout.

She and her father, who is president of the homeowners association, said neighbours would complain to the sheriff's department, which referred the complaints back to the homeowners association. The shooter was facing charges of assault, and one of the neighbors had placed a restraining order against him.
