A man aged in his early 30s, who was stabbed in the abdomen and back during the early hours of Friday morning on a busy inner-Brisbane road, has died in hospital.

Inspector Daniel Bragg said two men in their early 30s were crossing the road near the intersection of Petrie Terrace and Milton Road at around 4am, when a vehicle either struck or came close to striking one of the pedestrians.

It is believed that a verbal argument occurred between a pedestrian and a driver, with the driver exiting his vehicle to attack the pedestrian. The auto stopped and a man exited the vehicle assaulting one of the pedestrians.

There are reports the stabbing may have been sparked from an alleged road rage incident.

Inspector Daniel Bragg said it appears the driver nearly hit the victim while he was crossing the road.

Police are looking for a small auto - potentially a green Holden Barina - in relation to the incident.

"We'd also like to talk to the driver and any witnesses who might be able to give us information", Inspector Bragg said.

"He was in a very unstable, critical condition before being transported to hospital", Dr Rashford said.

He added that detectives were continuing to appeal for the man and woman in the vehicle to come forward as well as any other witnesses who could help police to piece together what happened.

That section of Milton Road was closed for about three hours on Friday, reopening about 7am.
